Artist's Comments

It feels as if Icarus created its image through me. In the wake of completing this drawing, I see this as my first Visionary work of art, in the mature sense. Something beyond me has been created through me. Icarus is an angelic being that materialized somehow between my highest visions of the human spirit, and my physical abilities as an artist and a physical being. Icarus is more than what I could have envisioned on my own. I look at this drawing and see an elevated sense of hope and responsibility for my future as an artist.

The way you color your pictures is really cool. What do you use? Colored pencils on black paper?

This is an amazing piece. Everything about it is perfect.

Favourite'd.

Even better. It reminds me much of an atomic bomb with those slight changes. Thats deep!

daaaaaaaaamn. The color scheme is absolutely brilliant. The way the different hues branch off of each other creates a fire-like sense of movement. I love it. [And the purple/blue ring-like thing .. whatever it is .. is really, really cool.]

oh, and... Alex Grey much? haha

It is as you describe Greg. He seems to have a message, an expanding ring of awareness that will wash across me as I behold his offering. The color, composition, balance, and simplicity, all give weight to his engaging pose. I look forward to the revelation of his insight. Well done my friend! :frail: :earth: :frail:

... and why Icarus? Is his a warning, a longing, prideful mistake?

Honestly, I am not sure the meaning of the name yet. When beholding it the night I finished the drawing, I realized it must have a name. Out of the aether, or emptiness, or whatever, the name "Icarus" popped into my head, and I doubted it, realizing I had a superficial understanding of it as a mythical character and I had probably read it somewhere recently. I was ready to blow it off and try to come up with a "cooler" name, but then I decided, first-thought, best-thought, and stuck with it. The name only adds depth to the mystery of the being, as it came from outside of what I could contrive from my ego.

A great balance between aesthetic beauty and visionary depth. The way the legs are positioned, one foot and one knee, gives these being a sense of titanic weight. The vaporous colors are exquisite. I like the challenging posture of the way the being is positioned in relation to the viewer. It is as if the being is coiled and ready to surge toward us (or conversely it is briefly submitting its vast powers and knowledge to the viewer, through some wordless sense of grace, preparing to confer a momentary access to an unkown level of life)...

Wow I really enjoy your explanation. I have been working on the next version of Icarus (larger and more thorough) and I tried kneeling in the posture for myself. It feels quite powerful - like an acknowledgment of one's own strength, and at the same time offering it with full conviction and confidence to the viewer. It was an interesting engagement with the drawing, placing myself in the character's posture in a very literal way.
